Pyrite and Calcite on Downey's Bluff Limestone, Bethel Level, attr. M.F. Oxford #7 Mine, Ozark-Mahoning Company, Cave-in-Rock District, Southern Illinois, Mined c. early 1970's, Holzner Collection #363, Miniature 3.0 x 5.5 x 6.0 cm, $225. Online 8/10.
Pyrite and marcasite with calcite on limestone matrix. The mining horizon, Bethel Level is indisputable, however, the M.F. Oxford #7 is an attribution based on the age of the collection and similar minerals from that mining era. Another location is plausible namely, the Annabel Lee Mine which also produced similar material from the Bethel in the mid-late 1980s. In either case, this is a very fine miniature of rare marcasite/pyrite assemblage from the district. In excellent condition. Holzner Collection #363. Entered into Ross C. Lillie database as RCL2730.
