Calcite on Fluorite, Bethel Level, Minerva #1 Mine, Ozark-Mahoning Company, Cave-in-Rock District, Southern Illinois Medium cabinet 8 x 9.5 x 15.5 cm $900. Online 3/3
Rich brown/orange fluorite, crystals to 7.5 cm on edge, in combination with orange scalenohedral calcite. Ozark-Mahoning Company mined this from pillar-robbing in old workings originally mined by Minerva Oil Company in the late 1940s-early 1950s. The documentation is exceedingly rare and nearly unprecedented. The opportunity to document minerals from these old workings was one of the most satisfying opportunities in my experience with the district. Specimen is in great condition with exception of one calcite termination cleaved on the upper right side. This crystal could be air braded off or perhaps carefully acid-etched but as is the piece is still very attractive and fine. Dr. David London Collection L-005. Mined by Ozark-Mahoning Company 1995.
