The Deardorff Mine is the most famous locality for quartz from Southern Illinois. Other locations such as Lead Hill and sections of Spar Mountain also produced good quartz but are rarely given credit due to lack of proper documentation and rarity of species. The Deardorff Mine was so productive for so many years that a number of good specimens were preserved. This is a characteristic mounded group with typical short stubby milky-white crystals with associated brown sphalerite and tiny calcites. Mined c. 1950s. Minor edge chips on a couple of terminations. Bynum Collection.
