Witherite with Alstonite and Calcite, Bethel Level, attr. Minerva #1 Mine, Cave-in-Rock District. Southern Illinois Small cabinet 4 x 5 x 7 cm $450. Online 3/30

NSMW12624

  • $ 45000

Creamy/yellow, waxy lustered, pseudo hexagonal witherite, 3 x 3.5 cm, with associated alstonite and calcite. This is a very unusual witherite in terms of the 'speckled' termination and may quite possibly be from the Bethel Level workings of Ozark-Mahoning: this points to the S.E. Oxford #11 Mine or northeastern area of the M.F. Oxford #7 as likely localities. It is definitely Bethel Level, Cave-in-Rock District in any case and mined ca. 1960s. Trivial nick on a calcite. Provenance: Shortman's Minerals (10 Mckinley Ave., Easthampton, Mass: no zip code making it a very early specimen); sold to Carl Bentley; sold to Don Olson Minerals; sold to Ross Lillie Springfield Show 2012. Entered into Ross C. Lillie Database as RCL2411.
